This book gathers papers presented at the 13th International Workshop on Self-Organizing Maps, Learning Vector Quantization, Clustering and Data Visualization (WSOM+), which was held in Barcelona, Spain, from the 26th to the 28th of June 2019. Since being founded in 1997, the conference has showcased the state of the art in unsupervised machine learning methods related to the successful and widely used self-organizing map (SOM) method, and extending its scope to clustering and data visualization. In this installment of the AISC series, the reader will find theoretical research on SOM, LVQ and related methods, as well as numerous applications to problems in fields ranging from business and engineering to the life sciences. Software intensive systems are increasingly expected to deal with changing user needs and dynamic operating conditions at run time. Examples are the need for life recon?gurations, management of resource variability, and dealing with p- ticular failure modes. Endowing systems with these kinds of capabilities poses severe challenges to software engineers and necessitates the development of new techniques, practices, and tools that build upon sound engineering principles. The ?eld of multi-agent systems focuses on the foundations and engineering of systems that consists of a network of autonomous entities (agents) that int- act to achieve the system goals. One line of research in multi-agent systems, inspired by biological, physical and other naturally occurring systems, concerns multi-agent systems in which agents share information and coordinate their - havior througha shared medium called an agentenvironment. Typical examples are gradient ?elds and digital pheromones that guide agents in their local c- text and as such facilitate the coordination of a community of agents. Since environment-mediation in multi-agent systems has shown to result in mana- able solutions with very adaptable qualities, it is a promising paradigm to deal with the increasing complexity and dynamism of distributed applications. Control in environment-mediated multi-agent systems is decentralized, i. e. , noneofthecomponentshasfullaccessorcontroloverthesystem. Self-organization isanapproachtoengineerdecentralized, distributedandresource-limitedsystems thatarecapableofdynamicallyadaptingtochangingconditionsandrequir ements without external intervention. This useful system property is often re?ected in functionssuchasself-con?guration, self-optimization, andself-healing. Engine- ing approaches to self-organizing systems often rely on global functionality to emerge from localand autonomous decisions of individual agents that commu- catethroughasharedagentenvironment.

In this book, first published in 2004, William Dembski, Michael Ruse, and other prominent philosophers provide a comprehensive balanced overview of the debate concerning biological origins - a controversial dialectic since Darwin published The Origin of Species in 1859. Invariably, the source of controversy has been 'design'. Is the appearance of design in organisms (as exhibited in their functional complexity) the result of purely natural forces acting without prevision or teleology? Or, does the appearance of design signify genuine prevision and teleology, and, if so, is that design empirically detectable and thus open to scientific inquiry? Four main positions have emerged in response to these questions: Darwinism, self-organisation, theistic evolution, and intelligent design. The contributors to this volume define their respective positions in an accessible style, inviting readers to draw their own conclusions. Two introductory essays furnish a historical overview of the debate.

We welcome you to the proceedings of the 4th International Workshop on Self-Organizing Systems (IWSOS 2009) hosted at ETH, Zurich, Switzerland. IWSOS provides an annual forum to present and discuss recent research in self-organization focused on networks and networked systems. Research in se- organizingnetworkedsystemshasadvancedinrecentyears, buttheinvestigation of its potentials and limits still leaves challenging and appealing open research issues for this and subsequent IWSOS workshops. Complexandheterogeneousnetworksmakeself-organizationhighlydesira ble. Bene?ts envisioned by self-organization are the inherent robustness and ada- ability to new dynamic tra?c, topology changes, and scaling of networks. In - dition to an increasingly complex Future Internet, a number of domain-speci?c subnetworks bene?t from advances in self-organization, including wireless mesh networks, wireless sensor networks, and mobile ad-hoc networks, e.g., vehi- lar ad-hoc networks. Self-organization in networked systems is often inspired by other domains, such as nature (evolution theory, swarm intelligence), sociology (human cooperation), and economics (game theory). First part deals with general modelling and methodology as conceptual - proaches for complex systems description. An introductive chapter by Michel Cotsaftis entitled "A Passage to Complex Systems", treats the notion of "Complex Systems" in opposition to that of a "Complicated System". This can be, he claims, comprehended immediately from the latin roots as "C- plex" comes from "cum plexus" (tied up with) whereas "complicated" ori- natesfrom"cumpliare"(piledupwith). Thepaperisawideandrichdisser- tion with elements of history (of the technical developement of mankind) with its recents steps : mechanist, quantum and relativistic points of view. Then, the need for a "passage" is illustrated by the discussion, with tools borrowed from functional analysis, of a typical parametric di?erential system. The last and conclusive parts give tracks for the study of Complex Systems, in parti- lar one can hope to pass to quantitative study and control of complex systems even if one has to consent a "larger intelligence delegation" to them (as - nounced in the introduction) by using and developing tools already present in dissipative Physics and in Mathematical functional analysis and ?xed point theorems, for instance. This "passage" is followed by a wide bibliography of more than 90 entries. The (non hasty) reader is invited to read this deep and far reaching account before browsing through the book.
