Online 1. Understanding Learner Performance on an Online Practice Platform [2023]

- Summary
-
The recent rise of online learning and practice platforms has not only given the promise to close the enormous current gap in educational resources around the world, but also put forward the need for a better understanding of their effectiveness and contributing factors. Luckily, such investigation is made possible by platforms that carefully collect data on user behavior and content features. Published by an online IT practice platform called Educoder, MOOPer is a large-scale dataset consisting of user interaction data with the learning materials and structured side information of all these materials. Applying linear analysis and deep knowledge tracing models to MOOPer, this study examines the relationship between learners’ behavior and learning outcomes on the platform. More specifically, the amount of attempts required by a learner to solve an exercise is predicted by content category, difficulty, learning history, and various characteristics during their interaction, including the number of retry attempts, hint usage, and time spent. An encoder-decoder transformer model achieves the best predictive performance, while the linear regression analysis reveals the effect of active help-seeking behaviors on positive learning. The findings will help identify patterns associated with effective learning from learners’ behavior data. This information provides opportunities to adjust the course design to the needs of a variety of learners, ultimately enhancing their learning experiences and outcomes.

The emergence of the Massively Open Online Course, or MOOC, has been a topic of considerable analysis and discussion in academic circles in recent years, and is not infrequently mentioned as a disruptive technology in higher education. As Stanford University has been prominent in the development of MOOC platforms, both the university as a whole and the Stanford University Libraries have a particular interest in understanding the potential for and impacts of this platform. This paper briefly outlines the emergence of MOOCs within the context of online learning tools and distance learning, looks at how Stanford University as a whole, and the Stanford Libraries in particular, are integrating these technologies in their pedagogy.

- Summary
-
Today online self-directed learning has become a common approach for learning due to the ubiquity of computers with internet access. Self-directed learning is especially prevailing in domains with significant social needs, such as Computer Science. However, learners often find it difficult to resolve their confusion during learning and feel isolated. Utilizing the connectivity of online environments and grounded in the theory of Community of Practice, this project proposes Crowd Note, an interactive platform that leverages collaborative efforts during online video-based asynchronous learning for university-level learners. The tool has two main design elements – a video-integrated discussion sidebar and a crowd-based concept map. A pilot study was conducted with two experiments of 49 participants. It is found that the tool raised learning engagement and learning gain moderately. Though there are variations across learners, it helped most learners feel more socially connected. It also promoted learners to use self-explanation learning strategy to better understand what they were taught. Through this project, we demonstrate the promising future of self-directed learning by designing and creating a collective community in an online learning environment.

- Summary

Executive Summary The energy development assumptions identified in the Department of Energy's position paper, 20% Wind Energy by 2030, projected an exploding demand for wind energy-related workforce development. These primary assumptions drove a secondary set of assumptions that early stage wind industry workforce development and training paradigms would need to undergo significant change if the workforce needs were to be met. The current training practice and culture within the wind industry is driven by a relatively small number of experts with deep field experience and knowledge. The current training methodology is dominated by face-to-face, classroom based, instructor present training. Given these assumptions and learning paradigms, the purpose of the National Wind Distance Learning Collaborative was to determine the feasibility of developing online learning strategies and products focused on training wind technicians. The initial project scope centered on (1) identifying resources that would be needed for development of subject matter and course design/delivery strategies for industry-based (non-academic) training, and (2) development of an appropriate Learning Management System (LMS). As the project unfolded, the initial scope was expanded to include development of learning products and the addition of an academic-based training partner. The core partners included two training entities, industry-based Airstreams Renewables and academic-based Lake Area Technical Institute. A third partner, Vision Video Interactive, Inc. provided technology-based learning platforms (hardware and software). The revised scope yielded an expanded set of results beyond the initial expectation. Eight learning modules were developed for the industry-based Electrical Safety course. These modules were subsequently redesigned and repurposed for test application in an academic setting. Software and hardware developments during the project's timeframe enabled redesign providing for student access through the use of tablet devices such as iPads. Early prototype Learning Management Systems (LMS) featuring more student-centric access and interfaces with emerging social media were developed and utilized during the testing applications. The project also produced soft results involving cross learning between and among the partners regarding subject matter expertise, online learning pedagogy, and eLearning technology-based platforms. The partners believe that the most significant, overarching accomplishment of the project was the development and implementation of goals, activities, and outcomes that significantly exceeded those proposed in the initial grant application submitted in 2009. Key specific accomplishments include: (1) development of a set of 8 online learning modules addressing electrical safety as it relates to the work of wind technicians; (3) development of a flexible, open-ended Learning Management System (LMS): (3) creation of a robust body of learning (knowledge, experience, skills, and relationships). Project leaders have concluded that there is substantial resource equity that could be leverage and recommend that it be carried forward to pursue a Next Stage Opportunity relating to development of an online core curriculum for institute and community college energy workforce development programs.

- Summary
-
In order for technologies of today and tomorrow to be built by all of us, technological skills need to be taught in a way that is more easily understood by all of us. This is where education in data science currently fails people from diverse backgrounds. Traditional approaches for teaching data science in online learning focus on mastering technical tools and programming languages to manipulate data, with little concern to relevance and context of learners. This excludes learners who face an additional barrier of grappling to understand references and terms before understanding core concepts. Design Data is a web-based learning experience which aims to democratize the learning of foundational data science concepts. Designed for adult learners without programming skills, it focuses on empowering learners to make sense of data through a personalized and contextualized learning experience.

The topic of distance teaching and online learning associated technologies and applications covers a galaxy of ideas, concepts, issues, concerns, and opportunities. Everything from workforce training, to accessing education, to digital divide issues, and the evolution of distance and online education into a multibillion-dollar enterprise, is included in the global conversation. Certifications, degrees, workforce training, and lifelong learning are all a part of public and private educational institutions. Partnerships with for-profit businesses, the rise of virtual universities within traditional educational systems, competition with for-profit institutions, and issues of quality are part of the regular workday at national and international educational institutions. The Encyclopedia of Distance Learning Technologies and Applications, edited by Patricia Roger, provides a comprehensive coverage of the evolution of distance learning, educational programs through distance learning, technologies of distance learning, program design and implementation, program delivery methods, distance learning and work force, and assessing effectiveness of distance learning programs. The Encyclopedia of Distance Learning Technologies and Applications is an excellent resource for comprehensive knowledge and practices in distance learning programs.
