Revered author Miguel de Unamuno decides to publicly support the Spanish coup of July 1936 and immediately faces reprisals from the government, losing his position as rector at the University of Salamanca while many of his colleagues are imprisoned. Meanwhile, Nationalists take control of Salamanca, and General Francisco Franco moves his headquarters to the city. Unamuno, who believes he has enough influence to liberate the innocent, heads to Franco's palace, determined to beg him for clemency

Based on the famous Siege of the Alcazár, which was held during the opening stages of the Spanish Civil War and led by Nationalist Colonel José Moscardó Ituarte against overwhelming Republican forces. During the siege, Moscardó refused to surrender the fortress, leading to the execution of his 24-year-old son Luis. The siege ended in September 1936 with the arrival of the Army of Africa under Francisco Franco.
