Abstract
'What are we humans, and how did we become the high technology species? What would be our legacy? What is the ultimate meaning of life? Many of these questions are still waiting for full and complete answers and explanations. 'THIS BOOK is the fully revised and updated second edition of 'Consciousness and Robot Sentience'. With lots of new material, it will provide new insights into artificial intelligence (AI) and machine consciousness, beyond materials published in the first edition. The organization of this book has been streamlined for better clarity and continuity of the lines of arguments. The perspective of AI has been added to this edition. It is shown that contemporary AI has a hidden problem, which prevents it from becoming a true intelligent agent. A self-evident solution to this problem is given in this book. This solution is surprisingly connected with the concepts of qualia, the mind-body problem and consciousness. These are the hard problems of consciousness that so far have been without viable solution. Unfortunately, the solution to the hidden problem of AI cannot be satisfactorily implemented, unless the phenomena of qualia and consciousness are first understood. In this book an explanation of consciousness is presented, one that rejects material and immaterial substances, dualism, panpsychism, emergence and metaphysics. What remains is obvious. This explanation excludes consciousness in digital computers, but allows the artificial creation of consciousness in one natural-like way, by associative non-computational neural networks. The proof of a theory calls for empirical verification. In this case, the proof could be in the form of a sentient robot. This book describes a step towards this in the form of the author's small experimental robot XCR-1. This robot has evolved through the years, and has now new cognitive abilities, which are described.'

Abstract
It is noted that there are many different definitions of and views about qualia, and this makes qualia into a vague concept without much theoretical and constructive value. Here, qualia are redefined in a more general way. It is argued that the redefined qualia will be essential to the mind–body problem, the problem of consciousness and also to the symbol grounding problem, which is inherent in physical symbol systems. Then, it is argued that the redefined qualia are necessary for Artificial Intelligence systems for the operation with meanings. Finally, it is proposed that robots with qualia may be conscious.

As a step towards thinking machines a modular neural architecture for an artificial cognitive system is presented. This system is designed to reproduce inner imagery and inner speech and to emulate cognitive functions like perception, attention, learning, etc. The system utilizes distributed signal representation and associative processing.

Abstract
It is argued here that the phenomenon of consciousness is nothing more than a special way of a subjective internal appearance of information. To explain consciousness is to explain how this subjective internal appearance of information can arise in the brain. To create a conscious robot is to create subjective internal appearances of information inside the robot. Other features that are often attributed to the phenomenon of consciousness are related to the contents of consciousness and cognitive functions. The internal conscious appearance of these is caused by the mechanism that gives rise to the internal appearances in the first place. A useful conscious robot must have a variety of cognitive abilities, but these abilities alone, no matter how advanced, will not make the robot conscious; the phenomenal internal appearances must be present as well. The Haikonen Cognitive Architecture (HCA) tries to facilitate both internal appearances and cognitive functions. The experimental robot XCR-1 is the first implementation experiment with the HCA.

18. Method and apparatus for detecting the most powerfully changed picture areas in a live video signal [1989]

Abstract
The invention relates to a conditional replenishment method and apparatus for detecting the most powerfully changed, and for the human eye most important, picture areas in a video image in order to compress the image into a transmission channel which functions at the rates of narrow bandwidth data connections. The digitized picture information read into the video memory is compared to the already transmitted picture information stored in the reference memory, and the change value (M) between these is compared to the preset change threshold (T). If the change value (M) surpasses the change threshold (T), the picture information of the respective picture area is coded and transmitted, and the corresponding picture information is stored into the reference memory, preparatory to a new comparison. The comparison between the new picture information and the transmitted picture information is carried out so that the change values (M) in each predetermined picture area are calculated by summing, pel by pel, the differences among the new picture and the reference pictures. The change values (M) obtained for each picture area are combined into a change histogram of the whole frame, which histogram contains the change values (M) in order of magnitude. From this change histogram, there is chosen a number defined by a predetermined reference value (N.sub.c) of picture areas with the largest change values (M). The change value (M) of the chosen picture area with the smallest change value (M) is set as the change threshold (T=M.sub.opt).
