An East Greek oinochoe decorated with geometric and 'orientalising' motifs. The body of the vase is divided into three main bands, the upper band featuring a centrally placed elegant bird in outline, with geometric detailing on the wing. Other decoration in this band include cross-hatched lozenges, lines, cross-hatched triangles and two spiral forms alongside the bird. The middle band consists of concentric lines and the base of the body contains rays. The neck of the vase is glazed black and the handle is decorated with horizontal stripes.

This Corinthian aryballos features the large figure of a lion, with the details of the mane, face and body added through incision. Around the lion is filling ornament of "pie-type" rosettes, in black silhouette with details incised and touches of added red colour. The handle has horizontal lines and there are dots around the edge of the lip. Petals adorn the top of the lip and the shoulder.

A Corinthian skyphos with an animal band around the body of the vase, featuring two lions, a goat and a water bird, with intermittent pie-rosettes in the background. At the foot are rays and the top border is decorated with horizontal and vertical parallel lines. The interior is glazed black.

This fragment of a cup preserves two galloping horsemen and part of an inscription. The mane and tail of the horse on the left is decorated with added white, with red for the rider's chitoniskos, while the colour scheme is reversed for the horse and rider on the right. Here the rider's chiton is decorated with added white and the tail and mane of the horse is in red. The inscription beneath the horses is of the 'Be of good cheer and drink well' type (the last two letters missing).

This black-figured 'Tyrrhenian' amphora bears the scheme that is typical for this vessel type. The foot, lip and handles are all black, with black rays radiating from the foot. The neck features lotus and palmette chains and the body has bands of different figures. On the obverse the shoulder band shows a row of hoplite soldiers with shields overlapping and added red and white shield motifs, partially preserved. On the reverse, the shoulder band is of komasts (dancing revellers) between a pair of sphinxes and beneath the shoulder bands are two further rows of animals, including panthers and bulls. On the neck on both sides is a conventional lotus and palmette design.

This Athenian band cup was the first object in the UKZN collection. The lip, stem and the foot of the cup are black glaze, while the edge of the foot and handle frieze (bearing the figurine decoration) are reserved. This band features, on each side, a deer flanked by two panthers. The animal motif is framed by a floral (palmette) motif. The tondo is black glaze with a reserved disc, a small black ring and a dot in the centre.

A small black-figured belly amphora with two similar scenes on obverse and reverse. On side A a man and a youth with short cloaks over their arms and with swords stand on either side of a clothed man with a spear. On side B the scene is repeated with swords omitted. There is added red paint on hair, beards and drapery and nonsense inscriptions in the field.

A black-figured kyathos or one-handled drinking cup, roughly restored. This vessel has seated and striding figures depicted on it, with vinestems and bunches of grapes between the figures.

This vessel is a black-figured plemochoe, probably used to hold scented water. The lip that overhangs the bowl helped to prevent the liquid from spilling. The vessel is predominantly covered in black glaze, but decoration also occurs in the form of red and black tongues and stylised ivy patterns on the lid and body.

This partially preserved and restored black-figured amphora shows the marriage of Dionysos and Ariadne on the obverse. Dionysos holds a drinking horn in his left hand and an ivy stem in his right: two typical elements of his iconography. Ariadne faces him, holding her himation off her face (or attempting to veil herself?) with her hand. Two dancing satyrs, Dionysos' traditional entourage, frame the pair. On the reverse the scene contains six warriors; three are in typical hoplite dress (greaves, crested helmets, spears and hoplite shields emblazoned with motifs in added white). The other three figures represent so-called 'Scythian archers' identifiable by their typical pointed caps, ornamented trousers, bows and quivers.

The fragments of this vessel preserve a large section of the scene on one side and two fragments of the other side. The better preserved scene shows the harnessing of the chariot of Athene. Athene (identified by her aegis) steps into her chariot while Herakles (identified by his club and lionskin) stands ahead of her behind the bellies of the polehorses. This scene may show the alliance between Herakles and Athena against the Giants. The fragment of the reverse scene suggests a Dionysian theme since a satyr and vine stems are depicted.

A black-figured olpe (jug) with Dionysos stepping onto a chariot which is drawn by four horses (only their hindquarters are shown). Dionysos is holding a kantharos and vine stem. There is a chequer pattern at the lip, with an ivy frieze and floral band beneath.

The scene on this lekythos is of Peleus wrestling with Thetis attended by two Nereids on either side. The figures are enlivened by added white and red. A grape vine appears behind the figures. Attributed to a painter in the Class of Athens 581.

A simple example of a fish plate, not decorated with the typical fish paintings but predominantly painted in black glaze. The edge of the plate is decorated with a narrow band of alternating black dots on the 'reserved' clay colour, with black lines on either side of this band.

The oval-shaped alabastron is an oil container with a narrow neck. This example is decorated with cross-hatched or lattice decoration in two sections, both topped by three black lines. From above, around the small mouth, a red 'reserved' ring encircles the flat lip.

A small black-figured amphora which shows a woman in a himation and a warrior with two spears and shield on the obverse, and two maenads dancing on the reverse. This is possibly a work by the Red Line Painter.
