"In the 1960's guerrillas were operating in almost all Latin American countries, as well as in Africa and Asia, and the need of specialized weapons to fight them arose. The Argentine Air Force, seeing this threat grow, asked the FMA factory to produce a counterinsurgency airplane to equip the force, but also to offer on the international market. After several proposals were analysed, a final product emerged, called the IA-58 Pucar̀, a robust twin turboprop aircraft with heavy internal weapons, planned to operate from unprepared airstrips on very hard conditions. The plane entered service with the Argentine Air Force in 1975 and more than 100 were produced over the years, with several versions being developed or proposed. It was purchased by Uruguay, Colombia and Sri Lanka, the type gained world notoriety when they took part on the 1982 South Atlantic war, but also had combat experience in Colombia and Sri Lanka, and was tested by the Royal Air Force. Now, with the original version already retired, the Argentine Air Force plans to convert them into the Pucar̀ F̌nix version, with new engines and avionics, with new missions too, like intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance. While some aspects of its story were described in many publications, most of it has never been told until now, including many unknown proposed versions and details of its operational record, both in Argentina and in the other countries that operated the plane." -- Provided by publisher.

- Summary
-
"At the beginning of the 20th Century, naval warfare, which for centuries had been limited to the surface, moved quickly into the domain below the surface and the air above. The influence of undersea and aerial warfare in naval history is well known. The fourth domain involving the electromagnetic spectrum, which also appeared at this time, also had an impact on naval warfare, though much less has been written about this important aspect of military conflict on the high seas. When navies began to make use of the airways, they soon discovered that it could also be used as a unique source of information about the opposing force, instituting a form of intelligence that would later be termed Electronic Intelligence. Also discovered was the value of interrupting or corrupting the enemy's communication signals that were transmitted in the ether, thus beginning a method of fighting we now term Electronic Warfare"-- Provided by publisher.

- Summary

- Summary
-
"At the peak of the Cold War in the 1950s the Soviet Union possessed some 12,000 aircraft, making it the largest air force of all the protagonists. By the 1990s this had declined to around 8,000, the reduction largely reflecting the increase in aircraft capability. As well as fighters and bombers, the Soviet inventory included trainers, transports, seaplanes, electronic warfare and ground attack aircraft, as well as an impressive helicopter fleet, notably the Mi-24 'Hind' gunship and the massive Homer transport. The Tu-4 'Bull' was the first Russian nuclear-capable bomber, a copy of the US B-29, which was followed by their range of jet bombers, the Il-28 'Beagle', Tu-16 'Badger' and M-4 'Bison'. The prop driven Tu-20 'Bear' and its successors including the Tu-22 'Backfire' and finally the Tu-160 'Backfire', were all formidable. The jet-engined MiG-15 fighter entered service in 1948 and proved itself during the Korean War. The MiG-17, MiG-19 and MiG-21 followed . Ground-attack aircraft included the Su-7 'Fitter' and M-23 'Flogger'. The 1970s saw the MiG-25 'Foxbat' interceptor, followed by the MiG-29 'Fulcrum' and Su-27 'Flanker', coming into service."

- Summary
-
"The A-10 is the Air Force's unlikely success story, an airplane designed to support the Army, and one that ground troops came to venerate. Originally conceived with the express purpose of destroying Soviet tanks, the Air Force only developed it to keep funding away from the Army's response to the mission, the AH-56 Cheyenne helicopter. Inspired by the biography of a tank-busting German pilot in World War II, the engineering and design of the A-10 fell to Pierre Sprey, a precious civilian who'd enrolled at Yale when he was just 15-years-old, and now, barely 30, was exiled to a Pentagon backwater with little, if any, supervision. The end result was one of the finest military aircraft ever built, a plane essentially constructed around a 19.5-foot, 4,000-pound cannon that fired 30mm depleted uranium bullets at a blistering rate. Looking like it was built from discarded airplane parts, it was probably the ugliest combat aircraft ever built, thus the "Warthog" appellation. But it was also an incredibly reliable ground attack aircraft, beloved by ground troops from Iraq to Afghanistan. Despite repeated attempts to replace it with stealth aircraft and drones, over 280 A-10s remain in service today, serviced by dedicated and imaginative engineers and maintainers, and defended by a fervent cohort of advocates descended from the Military Reform movement. This is the story of intra-service rivalries, Pentagon obsessions with speed and stealth over tactical simplicity, and an aircraft that shows no sign of obsolescence as it nears fifty years in service"-- Provided by publisher.
