La sordità prelinguale consiste in una grave perdita uditiva, congenita oppure acquisita, insorta prima dei 18 mesi di vita. Essa impedisce al bambino l'accesso al mondo sonoro e al linguaggio orale. La tecnologia dell'impianto cocleare può fornire risultati migliori rispetto alle protesi acustiche tradizionali, sia in ambito percettivo uditivo, sia in ambito linguistico, a patto che venga iniziato il più presto possibile un intervento multiprofessionale, specifico e regolare. Dopo un'accurata valutazione, è compito del logopedista programmare un piano di trattamento individualizzato, mirato allo sviluppo delle competenze comunicative e linguistiche, il quale richiede un intenso training uditivo. La raccolta di attività presentata è indirizzata a logopedisti e genitori. Essa è strutturata secondo i quattro livelli gerarchici di difficoltà crescente che si incontrano nel fisiologico sviluppo percettivo-uditivo (detezione, discriminazione, identificazione, riconoscimento), dapprima con sonorità ambientali, successivamente con suoni linguistici, parole e frasi. I tre criteri seguiti per la selezione delle parole sono stati la loro presenza nel vocabolario medio dei bambini di circa tre anni di età, l'esclusione delle parole utilizzate nei test di valutazione della percezione uditiva e la possibilità di disegnarne una chiara rappresentazione grafica. Tutte le attività sono descritte dettagliatamente e la maggior parte di esse può essere svolta sia con un singolo bambino sia con piccoli gruppi. Le caratteristiche del materiale consentono di modularlo e adattarlo alle esigenze del bambino, seguendone e stimolandone il graduale sviluppo delle abilità percettivo-uditive e delle competenze linguistiche.

There have been many recent advances in neurotology that have been published in general medicine, otolaryngology and neurology journals. There is a recent marked increase in interest in neurotology, manifested by the clinical experiences and research-publication work of otolaryngologists, neurologists, neuro-ophtalmologists, audiologists and physiotherapists. As a result, this will be a completely state-of-the-art work that includes all up-to-date neurophysiological data related to the vestibular system. It has been estimated that 10% of patients that present at an emergency clinic have vestibular disorders, including vertigo, and these disorders are frequently a cause of falls in elderly patients. On the other hand, many physicians treat their patients with vertigo with vestibular blockers, which treat the symptoms but do not cure the disorders. We feel that it is important to supply a source of information on the vestibular system and balance disorders, and this title will do that in a comprehensive manner.
