"Scientifique, impersonnelle, désengagée : aucun de ces adjectifs ne convient à l'observation entre 1750 et 1850. Ce qu'on appelait alors l'"esprit d'observation" était un talent universel, dont l'existence menaçait le consensus scientifique.
