"C'est quoi, les "études aréales" ? Un néologisme pour décrire les savoirs qui portent sur des langues et des cultures étrangères vivantes. En premier lieu celles de nos voisins, celles que l'on enseigne dans le secondaire et que l'on parle dans les échanges internationaux. Étudier ces langues, c'est aussi envisager des aires géographiques ou culturelles. Cet ouvrage retrace l'histoire des instituts spécialisés autour de ces langues qui naissent en Sorbonne à l'orée du XXe siècle. Quelle place les "études aréales", ces formations disciplinaires au carrefour de plusieurs savoirs, tiennent-elles à l'Université de Paris qui en a été le laboratoire ? Comment l'Université française a-t-elle fait une place à l'Autre ? Tales of the Elders of Ireland is the first complete translation of the late Middle Irish Acallam na Senorach, the largest literary text surviving from twelfth-century Ireland. It contains the earliest and most comprehensive collection of Fenian stories and poetry, intermingling the contemporary Christian world of Saint Patrick, with his scribes, clerics, occasional angels and souls rescued from Hell, the earlier pagan world of the ancient, giant Fenians and Irish kings, and the parallel, timeless Otherworld, peopled by ever-young, shape-shifting fairies. It also provides the most extensive account available of the inhabitants of the Irish Otherworld - their music and magic, their internecine wars and their malice toward, and infatuation with, humankind - themes still featured in the story-telling of present-day Ireland. by a young child, for whom Irish is a second language, English her first. The data on which it is based was recorded by her mother at home over a period of one year - February 1984-March 1985. The child was exposed to the second language in an Irish-medium playgroup (Naionra) for two years and subsequently attended an Irish-medium national school. The home language is mainly English but Irish is spoken in a limited number of contexts and with certain people. The analysis shows how language emerges from interaction but highlights mainly the child's contribution. Eithne gradually built up for herself the main structures of the language, from single word to complex sentences. Particularly impressive is the way in which she single-handedly sorted out the basic tense system, discovering for herself the exact match between form and function appropriate to the target.
