Welsh Gothic, the first study of its kind, introduces readers to the array of Welsh Gothic literature published from 1780 to the present day. Informed by postcolonial and psychoanalytic theory, it argues that many of the fears encoded in Welsh Gothic writing are specific to the history of Welsh people, telling us much about the changing ways in which Welsh people have historically seen themselves and been perceived by others. The first part of the book explores Welsh Gothic writing from its beginnings in the last decades of the eighteenth century to 1997. The second part focuses on figures specific to the Welsh Gothic genre who enter literature from folk lore and local superstition, such as the sin-eater, cwn Annwn (hellhounds), dark druids and Welsh witches. This is an updated and extended version of the book previously published under the title "A Geography of the Welsh Language 1961-1991". The publication expands on the main themes addressed within the original text, makes reference to research, and presents sets of language data both for individuals and for households in wales. An additional chapter examines the impact of migration on the language, the relationship between social class and ability to speak Welsh, and the bases for the reproduction and maintenance of the language within the context of the family. The final chapter is extended and considers the prospects for the language, in the light of political and insitutional developments (including the Assembly), planning issues (most notably housing) and developments in the field of education. The implications of these and other socio-economic forces for the long-term well-being of the language are evaluated.

Language serves as both a symbol and a definer of culture. The well-being and integrity of a culture depend heavily on the strength and vitality of its associated language. It is for this reason that the process of language change within particular cultures needs to be monitored and scrutinized. This volume is a map-based analysis of patterns of language change, specifically the Welsh language. It concludes that the prime influences on the language derive from the large-scale socio-economic changes which have taken place in western society as a whole since the end of World War II.

This book brings together seemingly unrelated Eastern and Western languages and finds common Celtic roots and reference points within them. This book provides information largely in the form of a glossary, selected for comparison of classical ancient, western and eastern names and words with links to Celtic. It aims to stimulate interest in uncovering Celtic roots and connections in modern languages, especially in eastern countries, where Celtic roots related to both history and language are sometimes ignored. The work is in three parts. The Background Glossary presents some basic components of common Celtic, Gaulish, P- and Q-Celtic; lateral connections with neighboring old and modern non-Celtic languages, from Europe and the Near East; and, vertical links between old and modern descendant Celtic languages from the British Isles, Ireland and Brittany. Old and Middle Connections provides names and words directly or indirectly referring to the Celts and their ancient and medieval languages. Brief biographical notes for historical figures and writers mentioned in these two sections are provided. The third part, Modern Connections, gives examples of words, mainly from Eastern Europe, related to Celtic roots by direct connection with common Celtic, Gaulish, P- and Q-Celtic languages and by indirect connection with them via ancient and medieval East European languages or by intermediate Old English, Old French, Old German and modern English, French, German, and Italian.

This text explores the theme of praise in the Welsh poetic tradition. It reveals a persistence in the appearance of this theme in writings ranging form the ninth century to the present day. The first part of the work gives an introductory overview of the tradition while the second part offers more detailed studies of aspects of this theme. Particular attention is given to the 18th-century works of Ann Griffiths and Williams Pantycelyn but there is also much illuminating discussion of 20th-century writers including Saunders Lewis, Gwenallt, Waldo Williams, Euros Bowen, Bobi Jones and Gwyn Thomas. In these studies the author develops contrasts and comparisons between the Welsh tradition and those of other nations and thus enables us to percieve its specific quality in a European and international context.
