- Summary
-
Since democratization, Latin America has experienced a surge in new forms of citizen participation. Yet there is still little comparative knowledge on these so-called democratic innovations. This Element seeks to fill this gap. Drawing on a new dataset with 3,744 cases from 18 countries between 1990 and 2020, it presents a large-N cross-country study of democratic innovations to date. It also introduces a typology of twenty kinds of democratic innovations, which are based on four means of participation, namely deliberation, citizen representation, digital engagement, and direct voting.
14. Justice and democracy in Brazil [2023]
- Newcastle upon Tyne, UK : Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2023
- Description
- Book — ix, 164 pages : illustrations ; 22 cm
- Summary
-
"This book details the struggle to establish and maintain democracy and justice in Brazil after 2000. From 1964 to 1984, Brazil had a dictatorship, which was followed by democratic elections. Later, from 2003 to 2016, the nation enjoyed a very popular and democratic government under President Lula and President Dilma, who created many social and educational programs that raised 32 million people out of extreme poverty. However, as this book highlights, since 2013, the nation has witnessed the rise of a very conservative movement, which led to the impeachment of President Dilma (2016), to the imprisonment of President Lula (2018) and to the election of a right-wing president, who represented a decline in democracy and rights from 2018 to 2022. In 2022, we had new elections, with the victory of President Lula, who took office on January 1, 2023. This book advocates for a new period in Brazilian politics, with full democracy, respect for the rule of law and social justice."--Publisher's website

15. Latin America's democratic crusade : the transnational struggle against dictatorship, 1920s-1960s [2023]
- Wells, Allen, 1951- author.
- New Haven ; London : Yale University Press, [2023]
- Description
- Book — xii, 715 pages : illustrations, maps ; 24 cm
- Summary
-
"By emphasizing Latin American reformers' decades-long struggle to defeat authoritarianism, this transnational history challenges the timeworn Cold War paradigm and recasts the region's political evolution Scholars persist in framing the Cold War as a battle between left and right, one in which the Global South is cast as either witting or unwitting proxies of Washington and Moscow. What if the era is told from the perspective of the many who preferred reform to revolution? Scholars have routinely neglected, dismissed, or caricatured moderate politicians. In this book, Allen Wells argues that until the Cuban Revolution, the struggle was not between capitalism and communism--that was Washington's abiding preoccupation--but between democracy and dictatorship. Beginning in the 1920s, the fight against authoritarianism was contested on multiple fronts--political, ideological, and cultural--taking on the dimensions of a political crusade. Convinced that despots represented an existential threat, reformers declared that no civilian government was safe until the cancer of dictatorship was excised from the hemisphere. Dictators retaliated, often with deadly results, exporting strategies that had been honed at home to guarantee their political survival. Grafted onto this war without borders was a belated Cold War, with all its political convulsions, the aftershocks of which are still felt today.--Dust jacket.
