The nascent science of Hydroinformatics comprises the application of information technology to the understanding and control of the waters of the world, the very arteries and viens of the biosphere. This book explains how information technology is already being used to realise a new solicitude towards nature and it provides a philosophical framework for these new ideas. It signposts further developments in this directions, and is illustrated by carefully chosen examples taken from current hydraulic engineering projects. The approach taken can perhaps best be described as "post modern" in that it insists that every effort has to be made to draw upon the knowledge and experience of the past in present-day planning for the future. Accordingly, this work not only draws on modern scientific achievements, such as those of numerical simulation, data modelling and artifical intelligence, but it also draws upon a long philosophical and theological tradition. The author shows how, without this background, advances in hydraulic engineering and indeed technology as a whole, will only accelerate the approach of environmental cataclysm rather than prevent it. The readership includes those who are genuinely concerned about the natural environment; engineers and applied scientists working in or for the water industry, water boards and river authorities; legislators on water affairs and those involved in water related litigation. This book reports the first systematic monitoring and modelling study on water availability, water quality and seawater intrusion of the Shatt al-Arab River (SAR) on the border of Iraq and Iran, where causes and concentration levels of salinity have not yet been fully understood, let alone addressed, leading to conflicting perceptions of its origin (external or internal), the natural conditions and the practices that can explain the current critical conditions. Current scientific knowledge on the SAR salinity problem is deficient, partially due to the complex and dynamic interaction between marine and terrestrial salinity sources, including return flows by water users of the different water sectors in the Euphrates and Tigris rivers upstream of the SAR. The development of a new series of monitoring stations and various modelling approaches helped to better understand the interactions between these different sources. The comprehensive and detailed dataset formed the basis for a validated analytical model that can predict the extent of seawater relative to other salinity sources in an estuary, and for a hydrodynamic model that can predict salinity changes. The adaptability of the models to changing conditions makes them directly applicable by water managers. The procedure can be applied to other comparable systems.

The book summarizes research work on the Wajid Sandstone, which provides integrated field and laboratory data to enable a detailed description of this unit including a facies analysis, porosity data, as well as permeability data to establish aquifer models. Detailed facies analysis at outcrop scale are supported by vertical and lateral sedimentological sections, facies and environmental analysis and supplemented by detailed laboratory petrographical and petrophysical data. The analysis and interpretation of the outcrop analog models include the reconstruction of the stratigraphic architecture at outcrop scale. Moreover, the results were described statistically, analyzed and eventually establish an outcrop-based aquifer model analogue. Glaciotectonism is an important component of modern glacial theory, gaining widespread recognition within the past 25 years. This book is the outcome of compiling maps of glaciotectonic structures and landforms for North America and central Europe, which is the basis for better understanding the role of glaciotectonism as a key component of glacial theory.
