""Barvalo" : "riche" et par extension "fier" en langue romani. Ce mot a valeur d'étendard et défend neuf siècles de présence européenne et d'affirmation culturelle, tout en s'intéressant à l'histoire et à la diversité des populations romani. Si celles-ci constituent la plus grande minorité ethnique d'Europe, elles font, aujourd'hui encore, l'objet de nombreuses discriminations. "Der Illinger Historiker Franz Josef Schäfer legt erstmalig die Geschichte der saarländischen Sinti und Roma vor, einer weitgehend vergessenen NS-Opfergruppe. A crucial contribution to Romani studies focuses on a single Slovak village to explore universal issues of belonging. In this important contribution to contemporary Romani studies, Jan Ort focuses his anthropological research on a village in eastern Slovakia reputed for the ostensibly seamless coexistence of its ethnically and linguistically heterogeneous inhabitants. Ort offers an ethnographic critique of this idyllic view, showing how historical shifts, as well as the naturalization of inequality and hierarchies, have led to the present situation between the village's Roma inhabitants and other ethnic populations. "The book is a collection of rare black and white images of Roma families in California during the early 1990s. Since their exodus from India more than a thousand years ago, the Roma - an ethnic group formerly known as "Gypsies" - have migrated to all continents of the globe. A large wave of Roma came to the United States from Europe at the turn of the twentieth century. The country is home to roughly 50,000 Roma people today, many of them in California. Yet, they remain hidden to the majority of us. Roma: Life with California's Roma Families is a collection of rare black and white images of Romani Americans living in California during the early 1990s. Photojournalist Cristina Salvador Klenz documented the lives of these families over a period of years, capturing their celebrations, social relationships, struggles, and rituals-the latter of which have survived centuries of discrimination and persecution. The photographs include people from the Kalderash and Machvaya nations, whose ancestors immigrated to the United States after being released from slavery in Eastern Europe. Other nations represented include more recent Romani immigrants who had also settled in Eastern Europe but arrived in California after extended stays in Chile and Colombia. An additional group, called the Ludar, has spent decades living in a modern-day camp in Southern California. Although many Romani-American tribes have little social contact with each other, all have been brought together in this set of photographs in hope that readers gain a greater understanding of this vibrant, resilient, and misunderstood people. The Roma issue is generally treated as a European matter. Indeed, the Roma are the largest European minority-their presence outside of Europe is a result of various waves of migration over the past four hundred years. Likewise, the stereotypes associated with the Roma-the problematized, stigmatized status of a "Gypsy" as well as the historical and contemporary manifestations of antigypsyism-are also of European origin. This book claims, however, that the perception of Roma being strictly a European issue is flawed, and that re-connecting the Roma issue globally represents an important learning experience and an added value. The book offers a critical exploration of Romani political activism in Colombia and Argentina, and compares it to that in Spain, narrated from the intimate perspective of Romani actors themselves. By outlining parallel lineages of Romani activism in three countries and on two continents, the author arrives at broad conclusions regarding the nature of ethnic mobilization. Mirga-Kruszelnicka proposes a new synergetic conceptualization of this multidirectional concept as an interplay between political opportunities, mobilizing structures, and frames of identity. Contributing to the vivid debate about the relationship between the researcher and the researched, the book also includes an original discussion of the positionality of scholars of Romani background.

The recorded history of gypsy communities in Europe begins with the arrival of the Roma in the fourteenth century, although genetic and linguistic evidence demonstrates that this group left northwest India sometime before the seventh. Remarkably, this leaves a 700-year unexplored void as the communities migrated across the Middle East. The main problem facing historians studying so-called gypsies and gypsy-like communities is a linguistic one - namely not knowing how to identify or recognise them in the medieval Arabic and Persian sources. Drawing on ground-breaking linguistic research, Kristina Richardson here demonstrates that the Banu Sasan - literally `from the tribe of Sasan' and commonly identified in scholarship as a fringe criminal gang or underworld brotherhood - should be less creatively imagined and viewed as an ordinary tribal confederation: the `missing' gypsy community. Having established this, Richardson fleshes out the existence of these communities across the medieval Middle East, touching on topics as diverse as their professions, their migration patterns, the art they left behind, the urban spaces they lived in and influenced, their daily life and their literature. Richardson's ground-breaking book will provide the foundation for future studies of the Romani in the period, in addition to revealing a great deal about the cities, communities, religions and cultures that they lived within as they moved and settled across the medieval Islamic world.

Winner of the 2022 Dan David Prize for outstanding scholarship that illuminates the past and seeks to anchor public discourse in a deeper understanding of history In Middle Eastern cities as early as the mid-8th century, the Sons of Sasan begged, trained animals, sold medicinal plants and potions, and told fortunes. They captivated the imagination of Arab writers and playwrights, who immortalized their strange ways in poems, plays, and the Thousand and One Nights. Using a wide range of sources, Richardson investigates the lived experiences of these Sons of Sasan, who changed their name to Ghuraba' (Strangers) by the late 1200s. This name became the Arabic word for the Roma and Roma-affiliated groups also known under the pejorative term 'Gypsies'. This book uses mostly Ghuraba'-authored works to understand their tribal organization and professional niches as well as providing a glossary of their language Sin. It also examines the urban homes, neighborhoods, and cemeteries that they constructed. Within these isolated communities they developed and nurtured a deep literary culture and astrological tradition, broadening our appreciation of the cultural contributions of medieval minority communities. Remarkably, the Ghuraba' began blockprinting textual amulets by the 10th century, centuries before printing on paper arrived in central Europe. When Roma tribes migrated from Ottoman territories into Bavaria and Bohemia in the 1410s, they may have carried this printing technology into the Holy Roman Empire.

Centered on the trajectory of the emancipation of Roma people in Scandinavia, Romani Liberation is a powerful challenge to the stereotype describing Romani as passive and incapable of responsibility and agency. The author also criticizes benevolent but paternalistic attitudes that center on Romani victimhood. The first part of the book offers a comprehensive overview of the chronological phases of Romani emancipation in Sweden and other countries. Underscoring the significance of Roma activism in this process, Jan Selling profiles sixty Romani activists and protagonists, including numerous original photos. The narrative is followed by an analysis of the concepts of historical justice and of the process of decolonizing Romani Studies.
