"Algérie, 1871 : la plus importante insurrection avant la guerre d'indépendance est menée contre les forces coloniales françaises. Dans son sillage, environ 900 000 Algériens, plus du quart de la population totale, se voient infliger un séquestre sur leurs terres, maisons ou plantations. Cette mesure punitive du gouvernement français est exceptionnelle par son ampleur comme par la place qu'elle occupe au XIXe siècle dans le monde. Si elle ne débouche pas toujours sur la confiscation définitive des biens, leur restitution (payante) est généralement conditionnée. Tout dépend de la responsabilité attribuée à titre individuel ou collectif dans la révolte, de l'inventaire et de l'estimation des droits de chacun, de l'emplacement des terres qui intéressent ou non la colonisation. Les archives du séquestre permettent une plongée dans le corps social que Didier Guignard entreprend à l'échelle du bassin versant de l'oued Isser, en Kabylie occidentale. Il y révèle la nature et l'étroitesse des liens entre les habitants, leurs formes d'adaptation au milieu et les bouleversements endurés. À partir d'une enquête de terrain, il fait remonter ses observations aux années 1840 puis les poursuit jusqu'aux années 1930, pour mieux nous faire comprendre les ressorts d'une société rurale entrée en révolte et l'évolution contrastée d'un lourd héritage. Si le séquestre des années 1870, moment phare de la colonisation française en Algérie, a déjà retenu l'attention des historiens, cette approche comparative et au plus près de la société rurale, qui emprunte autant à la géographie qu'à l'anthropologie, est inédite."--Page 4 of cover.

"Il apparait que l'histoire fait l'objet d'une puissante demande culturelle de la part d'un public élargi. Cette forte demande marque une évolution très particulière de la société française. Elle est relancée par les fils et les filles d'immigrés qui pensent trouver dans l'histoire coloniale les racines des discriminations dont ils souffrent. Mais aussi par des réactionnaires "nostalgériques", anciens baroudeurs des guerres de décolonisation qui cherchent à réhabiliter le système colonial. Parallèlement le champ de l'histoire est investi par de nouveaux acteurs, le juge, le témoin, le politique. Dans ces débats, qui ne cessent d'envahir l'espace public, sur le passé colonial, l'histoire coloniale de la Tunisie est minorée voire oubliée. The El-Salamuni mountain, the main necropolis of Akhmim during the Graeco-Roman period, is still relatively intact and largely archaeologically unexplored. This book contains the first contextual data of El-Salamuni. It examines the great heritage significance of the necropolis, its topography, the history of its investigation, as well as the special characteristics of the funerary art and burial customs in the necropolis.
