"This volume comprises a selection of papers delivered at the symposium "The Word Illuminated: Form and Function of Qur'anic Manuscripts" held at the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery during 1-3 December 2016 and organized in conjunction with the exhibition "The Art of the Qur'an: Treasures from the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts." Speakers investigated the materiality of luxury Qur'ans, from the lavish use of costly materials such as gold and parchment, the development of special scripts and intricate illuminated designs to the meticulously tooled bindings. In addition to examining the physical features of Qur'anic volumes, the authors examine the manuscripts in their artistic, historic, and religious contexts to understand more fully the transformation of these works into potent symbols of piety, political and religious authority, and into instruments of legitimacy. Over the centuries, many of the Qur'ans were offered as diplomatic gifts or taken as booty and endowed to mosques, tombs, and other religious complexes to perpetuate and transmit their exceptional baraka (divine blessing). Myanmar (formerly Burma) has 150 species of formally described amphibians (5 salamanders, 2 caecilians, and 143 frogs) and more than 200 species of reptiles (2 crocodilians, 20 turtles, 100+ lizards, and 100+ snakes). This herpetofauna was never the focus of a countrywide survey and study until recently, from 1997 through 2010. This treatise is the beginning of an overview of this fauna through sets of generic identification keys and checklists for adult amphibians, crocodilians, and turtles of Myanmar. It offers a partial summary of the biological findings of the Myanmar Herpetology Survey from 1997 through 2010, together with rapid assessment surveys during 2014−2017 for Fauna & Flora International's Myanmar Programme and recent herpetological research and surveys of other zoologists. -- Abstract, page ii

Donald Trump's presidency offered Americans a dire warning regarding the vulnerabilities in their democracy, but the threat is broader and deeper-and looms still. "January 6th was a disgrace, " Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell solemnly intoned at the end of Donald Trump's second impeachment trial on February 13, 2021. As to the culprit, Senator McConnell declared that "there is no question that President Donald Trump is practically and morally responsible." Before Trump even ran for President, his disdain for the rules, procedures, and norms of American democracy and the US Constitution was well-known and led prominent Republicans to repudiate him as "unfit" for the GOP nomination. Given the clear-eyed assessment of candidate Trump, why did the Republican Party nominate him as its presidential candidate in 2016 and then stand by him during the next four years? Much of the attention paid to Trump's rise to power has focused on his corrosive personality and divisive style of governing. But he alone is not the problem. The vulnerability is much broader and deeper. The ascendance of Trump is the culmination of nearly 250 years of political reforms that gradually ceded party nominations to small cliques of ideologically-motivated party activists, interest groups, and donors. Trump's rise is not an aberration but a predictable outcome of trends deeply rooted in American history but which accelerated in the last few decades. In Democracy under Fire, Lawrence Jacobs provides a highly engaging, if disturbing, history of political reforms since the late-eighteenth century that over time dangerously weakened democracy, widened political inequality as well as racial disparities, and rewarded toxic political polarization. Jacobs' searing indictment of political reformers concludes with recommendations to restrain the unbridled ambition of politicians who thrive on division and instead generate broad citizen engagement with tangible policy making.

"A new, dynamic reality is unfolding as climate change interacts with historical land management, causing changes in riverscape conditions that affect stream habitat and populations of native fishes. In Alaska, and elsewhere, land managers are facing new challenges as they seek to balance forest use with ecological resilience in rivers that support culturally and commercially important salmonids. In this context, data-driven forest management intended to maintain and restore landscapes relies on information that defines conditions over time. In this study, we analyzed 8 years of stream habitat and fish population data from a robust dataset developed to monitor aquatic conditions on the Tongass National Forest, Alaska. We found that patterns of fish population distribution, abundance (particularly anadromous salmonids), and instream habitat overlap with past forest-harvest site selection intended to maximize timber extraction. Historical riparian harvest disproportionately targeted easily accessible marine-connected subwatersheds that currently support anadromous salmonids such as coho salmon. Hydrologic type and forest stand age also influenced fish habitat. Further, we found that in rain-dominated watersheds with >42 percent old-growth cover, streams had wider channels and deeper pools that may provide some refuge for native fish from summer drought and low-flow conditions. However, as more watersheds transition from snow to rain, and winter storm intensities increase, even streams with wider channels and deeper pools that provide summer habitat may not provide winter refugia for native fish."

"We report three new taxa of bats from the late early Eocene to earliest middle Eocene (Bridgerian biochrons Br1b-Br2; ca. 50-48 Ma) Elderberry Canyon Quarry, Sheep Pass Formation, in the Egan Mountain Range of eastern Nevada, USA. Volactrix simmonsae gen. et sp. nov., represented by two dentaries, is tentatively referred to the family Onychonycteridae and exhibits a p3 that is much smaller than the p2, a semi-molariform p4, and lower molars with a postcristid configuration intermediate between necromantodonty and nyctalodonty. The genus Palaeochiropteryx, a palaeochiropterygid otherwise known from the early and middle Eocene of Europe, is the first representative of its genus and of the family Palaeochiropterygidae outside Eurasia and the Indo-Pakistan subcontinent. Palaeochiropteryx is represented at the site by a partial skeleton with crushed skull and two left dentaries (one unexposed within the same limestone block but revealed by microCT scanning) and is formally named Palaeochiropteryx sambuceus sp. nov. A third taxon, Sonor handae gen. et sp. nov., is a probable vespertilionid, evidenced by a dentary fragment with double-rooted p3 and myotodont lower molar morphology, and provides the earliest occurrence of the family Vespertilionidae in the western hemisphere. Despite the small number of specimens, these three new taxa comprise the most diverse Eocene assemblage of bats yet found in a single quarry in the western hemisphere"-- Provided by publisher
