David S. Riley's interest in the history, methodology and results of homeopathic drug provings began with his exposure to homeopathy in 1988 and his later study at the Hahnemann College of Homeopathy in Albany, California. These homeopathic drug provings are the result of his investigation of the research methods associated with homeopathic drug provings and contemporary research methodology. Dr. Riley has developed explicit and transparent research tools for (1) symptom selection criteria, (2) electronic data collection, and (3) blinding to reduce bias. These homeopathic drugs provings follow good clinical practice research guidelines (GCP) and incorporate the guidelines suggested by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann more than 200 years ago.

Since the subject of high dilution effects is still a subject for debate, this volume provides evidence in support of effects from control clinical studies, clinical records from veteran physicians, controlled experiments on animals and plants, and in vitro tests without any organisms (Chapter II). An overview of the methods for preparing drugs at ultra high dilution is also provided as well as the basic principles of homeopathy, which has been alleviating human suffering through the use of these drugs for several hundred years (Chapter I). Chapter III provides physical basis of high dilutions as evidence from the NMR, IR, UV and fluorescence spectra of those drugs. Since water is used as the diluents media, the structure and dynamics of water polymers in relation to high dilution are discussed in order to facilitate easy comprehension of this physical aspect, the basic principles of spectroscopy are also described. Chapter IV focuses on the mechanism of action of potentized drugs in the living system, discussing the structure of the cell, the plasma membrane, the integral proteins on the membrane, the interaction between these proteins and high dilutions and the manifestations of the therapeutic effects of high dilutions. Some aspects, peculiar to homeopathy, such as the chief miasm psora, and the literalities and time modalities of symptoms and drug action are interpreted from a scientific perspective. Chapter IV ends with a brief discussion on water structures and the origin of life to show the natural evolution of high dilution effects. The book not only helps in understanding the physical basis of high dilutions and their mechanism of action in organisms but provides many new avenues of investigation into this interdisciplinary field of science.

Homeopathy, as a medical system, presented a significant institutional and economic challenge to conventional medicine in the nineteenth century. Homeopathy was founded in 1796 by the German physician Samuel Hahnemann who ardently proposed that "like cures like, " counter to the conventional treatment of prescribing drugs that have the opposite effect to symptoms. Alice A. Kuzniar critically examines the alternative medical practice of homeopathy within the Romantic culture in which it arose. In The Birth of Homeopathy out of the Spirit of Romanticism, Kuzniar argues that Hahnemann was a product of his time rather than an iconoclast and visionary. "Le succès social et industriel de l'homéopathie nécessitait une analyse approfondie de ses origines. Cet ouvrage forme le premier volet d'une vaste étude sur la genèse de l'homéopathie d'Hahnemann (1755-1843) jusqu'en 1810, date de la première édition de son Organon. Nous analysons en détail, outre les sources hippocratiques et paracelsiennes traditionnellement reconnues, mais parfois contestées, du système homéopathique, ses origines historiques et philosophiques qui lui sont les plus contemporaines. Parmi celles-ci figure la pensée médicale de la seconde moitié du XVIIIe siècle que nous illustrons par l'examen d'ouvrages de médecins praticiens ou expérimentateurs. Nous montrons la filiation, soupçonnée mais à notre connaissance jamais étudiée, entre l'homéopathie d'Hahnemann, le rosicrucisme et la Franc-maçonnerie. Dès l'âge de vingt-deux ans, Hahnemann fut en effet initié franc-maçon et entra en contact avec un courant ésotérique véhiculant des "sciences" secrètes ou dites occultes. Le centre de gravité de la franc-maçonnerie était alors très mouvant, à la fois dans l'espace européen et dans les idées des différents ordres qui l'investissaient, allant de la philosophie des Lumières radicale à l'illuminisme spiritualiste. Nous dévoilons comment Hahnemann a puisé dans ce fonds commun humaniste et philanthropique pour combattre une médecine alors peu scientifique et une thérapeutique nuisible.
