"A pandemia de Covid-19 possibilitou uma maior notoriedade e evidência aos trabalhos de diversos pesquisadores(as) da área da História da Saúde e das Doenças. Esse fato possibilitou a expansão e desenvolvimento das atividades do grupo e nossas reuniões passaram a ser um espaço de diálogo e estudo sobre o passado, mas, sobretudo, de reflexão acerca das experiências e incertezas vivenciadas no presente que pairavam sobre o cotidiano da população brasileira e do mundo, marcando um momento de isolamento social, de negacionismo científico de governos extremistas e de milhares de mortes provocadas por uma doença que a princípio não havia uma vacina. A coletânea intitulada História das Práticas da Saúde e das Doenças, cujo nome é o mesmo do grupo de estudo mencionado, tem como objetivo central apresentar os resultados de pesquisas realizadas pelos integrantes do GEPHPSD, a partir de diferentes dossiês temáticos voltados tanto aos leitores acadêmicos como aos demais indivíduos e coletivos sociais. Buscamos, com este projeto, possibilitar que os conhecimentos advindos do campo da história da saúde e das doenças e de seus temas transversais alcancem um maior número de pessoas da sociedade brasileira. "Harry Benjamin (1885-1986), a German-born endocrinologist, was an early pioneer in hormone therapy and transgender medicine. During his long career, he assisted many people in transitioning, including Christine Jorgensen, the 1950's 'Ex-GI' turned 'Blond Bombshell' media sensation. The two became close collaborators, with Jorgensen working with Benjamin on his influential book The Transsexual Phenomenon, published in 1966. Alison Li's much-needed biography of Benjamin chronicles his passion for hormones and his lifelong interest in sexology.
