- Summary
-

11. History's angel [2023]
- Hasan, Anjum, author.
- New York : Bloomsbury Publishing, 2023.
- Description
- Book — 279 pages ; 24 cm
- Summary
-
"Alif is a middle-aged, mild-mannered history teacher, living in contemporary Delhi, at a time in India's history when Muslims are seen either as hapless victims or live threats. Though his life's passion is the history he teaches, it's the present that presses down on him: his wife is set on a bigger house and a better car while trying to ace her MBA exams; his teenage son wants to quit school to get rich; his supercilious colleagues are suspicious of a Muslim teaching India's history; and his old friend Ganesh has just reconnected with a childhood sweetheart with whom Alif was always rather enamored himself. And then the unthinkable happens. While Alif is leading a school field trip, a student goads him, and in a fit of anger, Alif twists his ear. His job suddenly on the line, Alif finds his life rapidly descending into chaos. Meanwhile, his home city, too, darkens under the spreading shadow of violence. In this darkly funny, sharply observed, and shockingly moving novel, Anjum Hasan deftly and delicately explores the life of Muslims in India and the force and consequence of remembering your people's history in an increasingly indifferent milieu"-- Provided by publisher.

- Blackwood, Algernon, 1869-1951, author.
- Dublin : Swan River Press, 2022.
- Description
- Book — xi, 189 pages ; 21 cm
- Summary
-
"The lure of the unknown is a collection of Algernon Blackwood's essays, talks, reviews, and anecdotes exploring encounters with the strange and unusual or, in Blackwood's preferred word, the "odd". They include his first attempts to investigate alleged haunted houses, his association with such luminaries as W. B. Yeats, "A.E.", and Gurdjieff; his thoughts on telepathy, reincarnation, elemental spirits, other dimensions, and his beliefs in what lies beyond our normal perceptions. These writings reveal not only Blackwood's diverse experiences but his depth of reading and analysis of the unexplained. Few of these essays have been reprinted beyond their first publication or their broadcast on radio and television. They provide another dimension to an understanding of one of the great writers of the supernatural"--Page 4 of cover.

"This highly imaginative and inventive collection of poems by fifty-one African poets writing from thirty countries across the continent, offers powerful poems that do not flinch from exploring experiences, hopes, aspirations that are deeply personal yet collective, the collection blurs the lines between the individual and collective voice in ways that are ironic, sad, humorous, light hearted, pessimistic, compassionate. Here poets subvert language, images and form to make them tell their stories, as well as being reflective of their past, present and future. Here poets remind us that human emotions can be and are beautiful, the journey of self-discovery is as painful as it is cathartic"-- Back cover.

"Honor Guinness is rich, aristocratic, shy and awkward - nothing like her glamorous cousins Aileen, Maureen and Oonagh. But when she marries the charming and ambitious, American Henry 'Chips' Channon, together, they make the perfect couple. Determined to conquer London society, they are soon are at the heart of the best social circles - including a close friendship with the Prince of Wales and Mrs Wallis Simpson. But within the marriage, all is less than perfect. Meanwhile, Honor's best friend, the beautiful, enigmatic Doris, is focussed on marrying well to provide security to her family. Born to a German-Jewish mother, she has charm and looks but not Honor's advantages of birth and connection. Set 1932-1936, The Other Guinness Girl is an evocative story of excess and wealth against a backdrop of events that changed Europe: The rise of Nazism, the abdication of a king, and the slide into World War II.
