This book analyzes the domestic relations which British men came to establish with native Indian women in early colonial Bengal. It provides a fresh look into the history of imperial expansion and colonial encounters by studying the large number of wills left by the British men who came in an official or economic capacity to India. It closely engages with these wills, considering them as unique personal records. These documents, where the men penned down details of their native mistresses, give a glimpse of what their lives, interpersonal relationships, household objects, and everyday affairs were like. The volume highlights how commonplace such non-marital cohabitation was and constructs the social history of these connections. It looks at issues of theft, violence, rape, bequeathment, and property rights which the women had to contend with, and also studies some of the early experiences of the mixed-race children who were a product of these relationships. The book uses the Factory Acts of the late nineteenth century as an entry point into the early history of labour relations in India, specifically the mill industry of Bombay. It unites legal and social history in a manner which differs from most social histories of labour, and offers a new perspective on the constitution of industrial relations in colonial India. The Factory Act passed by the Government of British India in 1881 produced the first official definition of 'factories' in modern Indian history as workplaces using steam power and regularly employing over 100 workers. It imposed certain minimal restrictions upon the freedom of employers in a limited range of industrial workplaces and invested factory workers, most explicitly children, with a slim set of immunities and entitlements. In 1891, the Factory Act was amended: factories were redefined as workplaces employing over 50 workers, the upper age limit of legal 'protection' was raised, weekly holidays were established, and women mill-workers were brought within its ambit. In its own time, factory law was experienced as a minor official initiative, but it connected with some of the most potent ideological debates and political oppositions of the age. This book takes these two pieces of labour legislation as an entry point into the history of 'industrial relations' (the term did not yet exist in its present sense) in colonial India, in the last quarter of the nineteenth century combining the legal and social history which diverges from most studies of Indian workers. It identifies an emergent 'factory question' built on the problem of protective labour legislation. The cotton-mill industry of Bombay, long familiar to labour historians as one of the nodal points of modern Indian capitalism, is the principal focal point of this investigation. While this is a book about law and regulation, it is neither a legislative nor a policy history. While it is preoccupied with the history of factory legislation, it does not offer a full narrative that takes this as its 'object'. And while the book focuses on Bombay's cotton mills, it contains significant departures both from the city and its major industry. A number of questions which have only rarely been thematized by labour historians-the ideologies of factory reform, the politics of factory commissions, the routines of factory inspection, and the earliest waves of strike action in the cotton textile industry-are raised in this book.

Provocative, insightful and passionately argued, Kashmir: Beyond Article 370 brings a unique perspective to an increasingly polarized debate on the dilution of Article 370 and 35A of the Indian Constitution and subsequent bifurcation of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories. On one hand, the book raises some interesting but out of sight issues that moulded public opinion in favour of the scrapping of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. On the other hand, it accurately highlights the anti-India provocations leading to the unprecedented August 5 decision by the Indian Parliament. The book reveals how the government of India was prompted to do away with the special status of Jammu and Kashmir and how the people in Kashmir responded to the situation that emerged in the wake of the Indian Parliament`s August 5 decision. The book provides a fascinating account of the events that actually added to the ideological commitment of the BJP government in revoking the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. It gives a detailed account of the challenges the Indian state faces in Kashmir post-Article 370 abrogation and explores what could be a possible way out. The book suggests that revulsion against religious extremism is pivotal in dealing with terrorism in all its manifestations. The author argues that Kashmir has lost its special identity to the extremist ideologies long ago as society let the fanatics get away with their every attack on the unique identity of Kashmir without protesting. The fanatics were allowed to impose their narrow worldview on the people in Kashmir and they readily fell for it. The book argues that mutual respect and affection amongst the people of all faiths in Kashmir for centuries made it possible to create a common culture "Kashmiryat". Unfortunately, that culture has been butchered and vandalized by the extremists. So, the argument that Article 370 protected Kashmir`s unique identity is vague. The book highlights how the politics around article 370 pitched the people of the three regions of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh against each other and how this the article was used to create a communal divide by the political elites in Jammu and Kashmir. It offers a much-needed corrective to the self-serving narratives on both sides of the divisive debate and seeks to help us understand Kashmir post-370 abrogation in a better way. It elaborates on how the juggernaut of extremism emerged from the mosque and the madrasa and crushed whosoever stood against it.

Based on original sources, this volume is a pioneering work in the study of the growth and development of judicial administration in Assam since the beginning of the East India Company's rule in the province till it was separated from the Bengal Presidency in 1874. In view of the fact that Assam had its own laws and codes different from those of other provinces of British India, this work is unique and pioneering in its reach. Assam was administered under non-regulation system which had its origin in the neighbouring province of Bengal and was governed by a mixed system of local and regulation laws. In the administration of civil justice, the Bengal regulations were entirely dispensed with, while in criminal administration the regulations were followed more or less. Since the occupation of the province by the Company's government till 1837 the fundamental drawback of the entire judicial administration was the want of a definite code of law, the absence of which confused the administrators in delivering justice. It was only in 1837 that rules for the civil and criminal administration, popularly known as the Assam Code, were drafted and judicial administration in the province found a sound footing. The presentation and analysis of the laws and codes prepared by the Government of Bengal in its executive capacity in consultation with the local authorities in Assam is the most distinctive feature of this comprehensive work.
