"Christopher Blakley's Empire of Brutality is a human-animal history of slaving and slavery in the Atlantic World between the end of the seventeenth century and the abolition of the Atlantic trade in 1808. His multidisciplinary study examines how varied relationships between enslaved people and animals led to the dehumanization and racialization of people of African descent in the Americas. Blakley discusses the role of animal exchanges among slavers in West Africa, the knowledge and curiosity of enslaved specimen collectors in the Atlantic world, regimes of labor on Caribbean and Chesapeake plantations, and the forms of resistance that enslaved people engaged in by injuring, killing, stealing, and thinking about animals. His analysis provides a better understanding of why enslaved people emphasized in their writing how slaveholders compared them to animals, suggesting that critiques of slavery as dehumanizing by people of African descent were to a marked degree the result of these material human-animal networks and linkages. Blakley's study brings together disparate geographies-including the castle trade in Atlantic Africa, slave depots in New Spain, and plantations in the British Caribbean and Chesapeake worlds-to build on the emerging literature of human-animal studies and new scholarship in early American environmental history. His work is among the first to approach human-animal networks under slavery systematically and comprehensively. It makes a significant contribution by historicizing human-animal relations produced by Atlantic-wide networks of slavery. It also provides an analysis of these linkages that, over time, led to the racialization and dehumanization of people of African descent as animal-like subjects. "This book explores, by observation and analysis, the methods cities and their subjects use to find meaning in the context of urban life, in particular the city's relationships to social change and what has been traditionally identified as justice. I treat the city as a site and a situation of action that exhibits interpretive collisions in relation to contested views of everyday life and its management: a collective discourse of conflicting views of globalization, gentrification, innovation, preservation, market value, popular culture, crowds, consumption, urban governance, and different strategies proposed for healing the ever -present conflicts of the democratic city over these topics. The aim of each chapter is to use a problem of urban life to to observe and analyze assumptions and values that are typically taken for granted and unspoken. It is thus possible to refashion a collective discourse as dialogue: a dialogue which is then explored and analyzed to reveal occasions of problem-solving in relation to the quality of the city as an environment. This draws on a method developed in earlier works by Blum and McHugh for engaging texts and social interaction. "Les vingt-huit volumes in-folio de l'Encyclopédie, ou Dictionnaire raisonné des Sciences, des Arts et des Métiers, par une société de gens de lettres, furent publiés entre 1751 et 1772. Pendant ces deux décennies, environ un million six-cent-mille Africains furent embarqués dans des navires négriers dont deux-cent-cinquante-mille environ à bord de navires français. L'Encyclopédie reste comme un monument des Lumières, et cela jusqu'à et y compris dans ses limites. Parmi les 74 000 articles de l'Encyclopédie, moins d'une centaine concernent explicitement la question des traites négrières et de l'esclavage colonial. La contextualisation, l'analyse et la mise en relation de ces articles, de longueur et de portée très inégales, permettent de s'interroger sur les contradictions et les ambiguïtés des encyclopédistes, mais aussi de prendre en compte l'expression parfois fulgurante de principes antiesclavagistes. "Inverting the conventional history of American suburbanization, Tim Keogh turns the spotlight from wealth and freedom to poverty and inequality. Focusing on the archetypal Long Island communities of the postwar era, Keogh shows that a key driver of suburban development and the segregation it embodied was not housing but employment. Inequality and injustice were baked into suburban development, but housing discrimination was a secondary expression of this, not a primary cause. As a result, equity-minded suburbs that focused on housing policy rather than employment opportunities were doomed to fail.
