- Huber, Sonya, 1971- author.
- First edition - Lakewood, OH : Belt Publishing, 2023.
- Description
- Book — 189 pages ; 18 cm
- Summary
-
"New Lenox, Illinois, is a small town deep in the corn grid of the Midwest, where it runs up against the grid of south Chicagoland, a placeless location marked by geographical flatness and dwindling industry. It’s also where Sonya Huber grew up, and in the twenty essays collected here, she lovingly explores the ways New Lenox—and the Midwest more generally—has come to define her life. Here, you’ll find portraits of Huber’s parents as they tirelessly run a small business, homages to the Gen-X joys of wearing flannel, secret insights about being a Pizza Hut waitress, and odes to the ecstasy of blasting classic rock as your car hurls along I-80. Whether she’s writing about All in the Family, detailing the region’s influence on David Foster Wallace, or exploring the poetry embedded in a can of Miller High Life, her vision is astute and her prose convincing." publisher's website.

- Shaw, Ian W., author.
- Lawrence, Kansas : University Press of Kansas, [2023]
- Description
- Book — 248 pages : illustrations ; 23 cm
- Summary
-
"On October 5, 1892, the last of the major outlaw gangs of the Old West was destroyed in a gun battle in Coffeyville, a small town in southeastern Kansas. When the smoke cleared, eight men were dead and three others were seriously injured. Four of the dead were members of the notorious Dalton Gang: Dick Broadwell, Bill Powers, and two brothers, Bob and Grat Dalton. A fifth outlaw, twenty-one-year-old Emmett Dalton, was captured alive but with twenty-three bullet and buckshot wounds. Emmett Dalton not only survived Coffeyville but prospered. After serving a fourteen-year prison term at the Kansas state penitentiary, he moved to Southern California. In a world completely foreign to him, he published two accounts of his and his brothers' exploits (both of which were made into movies) and became a celebrity who worked with the first generation of Hollywood cowboys and one of Los Angeles's most respected property developers. Ian Shaw's Into the Sunset is the remarkable story of Emmett Dalton and how he and his brothers drifted from one side of the law to the other in the frontier lands of the late nineteenth century. It is the story of shoot-'em-ups and train robberies, of the closing frontier, and of what desperate men in desperate times do to survive. Following Dalton to California, Shaw tells the story of how Emmett was able to live a life that would become the stuff of legend and achieve the level of success that was once the object of each member of the Dalton Gang."--from publisher's website.

"'Letters to Dan' takes the reader to the Ozark Mountains in Arkansas. The guideposts for this journey are the region's rivers and hills, its forests and vibrant wildflowers. In personal essays and photographs, Don House describes old cemeteries, abandoned buildings, and highway memorial crosses. He introduces us to a neighbor skilled at water dowsing, to local cafe owners and river guides. The essays express a love of the region's heritage and its modern culture. The book creates a sense of place and shows us how to live in harmony in the natural world." -- Back cover
