"He was a famous general, victor over the Persians, conqueror of the Vandals and Ostrogoths. She was a first-rate political operative, deposer of a pope, wielder of influence. Together, Belisarius and Antonina were the most powerful couple of the sixth-century Roman world, excepting only their sovereigns and friends, the emperor Justinian (r. 527-565) and empress Theodora. Belisarius and Antonina found strength in their marriage, which was not just a romance but also an enormously successful partnership. Antonina travelled around the Mediterranean with Belisarius, accompanying him on military campaigns to Mesopotamia, North Africa, and Italy. "What makes a demagogue? A much more friendly touch, or more importantly, a perception of a friendly touch, than has previously been explored. Demagogues, Power and Friendship in Classical Athens examines the ways in which a demagogic leadership style based on personal connection became ingrained in this period, drawing on close study of several genres of literature of the late 5th and early-to-mid 4th centuries BCE. Such connection was particularly effective with lower classes of Athenians, who had been accustomed to being excluded from politicians' friendship-based approaches to coalition-building. Comedies of Aristophanes (particularly Knights), tragedies of Euripides (particularly Iphigenia in Aulis), and historical biographies of Xenophon (particularly Anabasis and Cyropaedia) depict demagogues, or characters exhibiting demagogic characteristics, using a style of outreach to members of neglected classes that involved provoking feelings of friendship with individuals in these classes, whether the demagogues and individual supporters actually interacted closely or not. These leaders employed techniques, such as propinquity, homophily, and transitivity, that both contemporary sociologists (and, in some cases, Aristotle) recognize as effective for such purposes. During the period of Independence, the hieropes - magistrates of Delos responsible for managing sacred goods - had to each year draw up an inventory of offerings dedicated to Apollo and other divinities. They then had them engraved on steles that excavators from the French School of Athens unearthed many centuries later. In a thesis defended in 1959, Jacques Tréheux dealt with everything concerning vase collections, which led him to critically analyze the inscriptions published in IG XI 2 then in the ID collection. His study mainly focuses on the inventories of the Hieropoion and the Chalcothèque. J. Tréheux would have liked to extend this study to all the inventories; but his work remained unfinished. At least the seven chapters collected here teach a lot about the management of offerings, the writing of the first inventories and a certain number of terms used by the hieropes - the meaning of which he was able to clarify. Addenda and corrections due to Pierre Charneux as well as detailed indices make it easier to read and consult. -- EFA Editions website.
