"For the first time, this book presents the complete collection of Greek inscriptions of Gebel el-Silsila East - Ancient Egypt's largest and most important sandstone quarry, including lists of names and professions of individuals involved in the quarry expeditions. "This book, built around the study of the representation of age and identity in 23,000 Latin funerary epitaphs from the Western Mediterranean in the Roman era, sets out how the use of age in inscriptions, and in turn, time, varied across this region. Discrepancies between the use of time to represent identity in death allow readers to begin to understand the differences between the cultures of Roman Italy and contemporary societies in North Africa, Spain, and southern Gaul. The analysis focuses on the timescapes of cemeteries, a key urban phenomenon, in relation to other markers of time, including the Roman invention of the birthday, the revering of the dead at the Parentalia and the topoi of life's stages. In doing so, the book contributes to our understanding of gender, the city, the family, the role of the military, freed slaves, and cultural change during this period. The concept of the timescape is seen to have varied geographically across the Mediterranean, bringing into question claims of cultural unity for the Western Mediterranean as a region. Der Karl-Christ-Preis ist dem Andenken an den Marburger Althistoriker Karl Christ gewidmet (1923-2008). Mit dem Preis werden seit 2013 herausragende wissenschaftliche Leistungen auf dem Gebiet der Alten Geschichte und ihrer Nachbardisziplinen sowie der Wissenschafts- und Rezeptionsgeschichte des Altertums ausgezeichnet. Der fünfte Preisträger ist Klaus Hallof. Der brillante Epigraphiker hat sich sein ganzes Forscherleben um das Griechische Inschriftenwerk der Berliner Akademie, die Inscriptiones Graecae, verdient gemacht. Auch unter den schwierigen Bedingungen in der DDR hat er mit grosser innerer Unabhängigkeit altertumswissenschaftliche Grundlagenarbeit geleistet und Quellen erschlossen, ohne die neue Erkenntnisse in der Alten Geschichte nicht zu erzielen sind. Als vorzüglicher Wissenschaftler und erfolgreicher Wissenschaftsorganisator hat er nach der Wende das griechische Inschriftenwerk in ein Vorzeigeprojekt der altertumswissenschaftlichen Unternehmungen der Berliner Akademie verwandelt. Immer wieder hat er sich zudem mit der Geschichte seines Faches beschäftigt und damit die wissenschaftsgeschichtlichen Forschungen Karl Christs fortgesetzt. Den Vortrag, den Klaus Hallof zur Verleihung am 2. April 2022 hielt, widmete sich dem Thema: "Kos 243 v. Chr. "This book is the first volume of a new corpus of Greek and Latin inscriptions of the Northern Black Sea region, which is planned to include ail known inscriptions (both on stone and other supports) found in the area. The corpus of lapidary inscriptions of this region was published only once, over hundred years ago, by Vasilii Latyshev. Since then, the number of known inscriptions has increased significantly. The new corpus will close an enormous gap in the availability of authoritative texts of primary sources for the study of Greeks and local peoples of North Pontic region. This volume includes Greek and Latin lapidary inscriptions from the region between the mouth of the Danube and the mouth of the Dniester, where the Greek cities of Tyras and Nikonion were located. Inscriptions were also found at the Roman fortifications on the northern bank of the Danube. The corpus includes 121 inscriptions (Latyshev's corpus counts 19 for this region), many of which are published for the first time. The publication of ail inscriptions, with the exception of lost oves, is based on the originals studied by the author in the museums where they are kept. The lemmata include, in addition to a detailed description of the inscriptions and their supports (including full measurements of the originals), a complete bibliography, an indication of the conditions of fends and modem location, and a detailed historical and philological commentary. The descriptions use the PETRAE format. The texts of the inscriptions are accompanied by a critical apparatus- and translations. The corpus is fully illustrated - each lemma is accompanied by a photograph or, if neither the stone nor its photographs have survived, by the best reproductions that can be found (e.g. drawings, manuscript copies, etc.)."--Page 4 of cover.
