"Mission, race, and empire have shaped the development of global Christianity as a whole, and studies of modern world Christianity pay close attention to how the practice and beliefs of the faith have been reshaped through the agency of converts and new churches in new cultures. This book explores how Christianity has been transformed and contextualized through the experience of mission, race, and empire from the "other side": closely examining the history of The Episcopal Church for the ways in which it was shaped and changed through its experiences of mission and colonialism from roughly 1580 through 2021. The book traces the denomination's many trials and errors in missional ideology and practice, in concert with colonialism and racial projects, from the first English contact with the Algonquin cultures in Roanoke and Jamestown, through embroilment in slavery and anti-slavery, Christianizing and civilizing both white settlers and Native cultures, missional critiques, liturgical renewal, suburban expansion, Civil Rights, and the development of an entirely new understanding of mission, missio dei, in the second half of the 20th century, focused on inclusion and justice. By focusing on "mission," the way in which the church tries to incorporate and relate to those outside of its existing boundaries, both the understanding of the Episcopal Church and its relationship to larger global processes and patterns in world Christianity shift towards greater complexity, conflict, dynamism, and diversity"-- Provided by publisher.

"Volume IX of the Baptists in Early North America Series provides a unique window into the inner life of the Sandy Creek Baptist Tradition. The records of Sandy Creek Baptist Church in North Carolina were destroyed by a fire, leaving a gap in the historical record. Baptists in Early North America--Abbott's Creek, North Carolina, Baptist Church, Volume IX, containing the records of the first church founded by Shubal Stearns and Daniel Marshall after their Separate Baptist movement took off at Sandy Creek, helps to fill this gap. Abbott's Creek, like many churches in the Sandy Creek tradition, experienced significant growth during the Second Great Awakening. This growth was followed by an increase in church discipline, then controversy, and eventually schism over the newly formed convention system among North Carolina Baptists. The church split in 1832 with Abbott's Creek Primitive Baptist Church continuing with the majority of members and Abbott's Creek Missionary Baptist Church forming a new congregation a few hundred yards away. The records contained in this volume begin in 1783 when the church was reconstituted following the Revolutionary War and continue through 1836. The records cover the ministries of George Pope and Ashley Swaim and the church's controversy over mission methods focusing on the work of Samuel Wait. The annotations included along with the transcribed minutes include information about the work of the Sandy Creek Baptist Association, of which Abbott's Creek was a founding member. An extensive bibliography and indexes are included"-- Provided by publisher

"This study examines Adin Ballou and his spiritual quest in New England from 1820 to 1880. The author argues that denominational histories, however important, do not explain what a nineteenth-century Christian became. This book looks at how Ballou exemplifies this paradox"-- Provided by publisher

-- Page 4 of cover.

"A history of Washington National Cathedral and the theory of an American civil religion. In 1792, Pierre Charles L'Enfant, the first city planner of Washington, DC, introduced the idea of a "great church for national purposes." Unlike L'Enfant's plans for the White House, the US Capitol, and the National Mall, this grand temple to the republic never materialized. But in 1890, the Episcopal Church began planning what is known today as Washington National Cathedral. In American Kairos, Richard Benjamin Crosby chronicles the history of not only the building but also the idea that animates it, arguing that the cathedral is a touchstone site for the American civil religion-the idea that the United States functions much like a religion, with its own rituals, sacred texts, holy days, and so on. He shows that the National Cathedral can never be the church L'Enfant envisioned, but it can be a starting point for studying the conflicts of belonging, ideology, and America's place in the world that define the American civil religion. By examining correspondence between L'Enfant, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and others, and by diving into Washington National Cathedral's archives, Crosby uncovers a crucial gap in the formation of the nation's soul. While L'Enfant's original vision was never realized, Washington National Cathedral reminds us that perhaps it can be. The cathedral is one of the great rhetorical and architectural triumphs in the history of American religion. Without government mandate or public vote, it has claimed its role as America's de facto house of worship, a civil religious temple wherein Americans conduct some of their highest, holiest rituals, including state funerals and National Day of Prayer services"-- Provided by publisher

"While Edwards's theology has been studied extensively since 1950s, no published monograph on his millennialism is available. The standing controversial issues include Edwards's awareness of the millennial chronology and geography, his contributions to Puritan millennial thoughts, and the political or apolitical nature of his millennialism. Living in eighteenth-century New England Colony, Edwards was confronted with several theological and intellectual challenges, which include Arminianism, Arianism, Socinianism as well as Deism, humanistic rationalism and religious skepticism. In this context, Edwards went on developing his millennialism in light of his Christological, Judeo-centric and cosmic theological visions"-- Provided by publisher

- Summary
-
New England theologian Jonathan Edwards came to prominence at the culmination of a dramatic paradigm shift in millennialism that had begun in the sixteenth century, declaring that a thousand-year earthly kingdom would arrive in the future. For Edwards, the land of Israel would be the ideal location of the millennial kingdom, and the people of Israel, after their restoration, would play critical and decisive roles in the millennium's commencement. Edwards's millennial vision was also cosmic, however, and included both Europe and China. Unlike his Protestant predecessors and his Puritan contemporaries, Edwards's millennialism de-centralized England and New England. Contrary to what many have argued, Edwards neither originated nor advocated the notion of the American redeemer nation. In America's Theologian Beyond America, Victor Zhu establishes the coherence of Edwards's Judeo-centric and cosmic vision of the millennial kingdom and argues that this vision is an indispensable part of Edwards's theological system. He highlights three theological loci in Edwards's millennialism: the greatness of God's divine sovereignty, the magnificence of His glory, and the capaciousness of His kingdom. Zhu demonstrates Edwards's conviction of the progressive realization of the kingdom, refuting the prevailing misinterpretation that Edwards thought the millennium was imminent. He explores Edwards's cosmic vision of the millennial kingdom, which extended from New England and Israel to China and other parts of the "heathen" world. In conclusion, Zhu examines the contemporary relevance of Edwards's millennialism in Chinese millennial movements.
