In 1825, the first Mexican president, Guadalupe Victoria influenced by historian Lucas Alamán, ordered to collect in a room of the Royal and Pontifical University, all the objects and documents considered historical legacy of the new Mexican Republic, along with donations from individuals, and archaeological pieces found in the Plaza Mayor of Mexico City, as well as documents belonging to the collection of Lorenzo Bouturini. Such an initiative would give rise to the creation of the Museo Nacional Mexicano (National Mexican Museum). In December 1865, Emperor Maximilian of Habsburg ordered the establishment of the Museum in the building of the former mint "Casa de Moneda". Due to the increase in collections, it was remodeled at the beginning of the 20th century and reopened in 1910 with the name of Museo Nacional de Arqueología, Historia y Etnografía. Eventually the collections of the museum had three destinies: the collection of Natural History was sent to the building of the Chopo at the end of the Porfiriato. History collections were housed at the Chapultepec Castle and in 1940, the Archaeology collections became the Museo Nacional de Antropología. This work addresses the administrative, academic and political history of the Museum from its creation until the eve of the Porfiriato, emphasizing its internal organization through numerous organizational charts that condense the scientific concerns and visions of the scholars who, wielding academia and patriotism, dedicated their lives to the institution to enrich Mexico's national and cultural heritage.
