The Reformation anniversary in 2017 showed that European and Anglo-American scholarly traditions are developing divergent historical and theological narratives of the history and significance of the Reformation which are scarcely compatible with each other. The German-language tradition continues to attribute to the reformation a religious and cultural dynamic that distinguished it from the longer-term processes of confessionalisation. In the Anglo-American tradition, on the other hand, 'the Reformation' is often understood a particular amongst a series of European, or even global, series of distinct "reformations", which no longer share a common narrative. This volume brings together papers presented at a conference organised by the Verein für Reformationsgeschichte at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg in 2019, which sought to bring these different scholarly traditions, together with the concepts of history, society and gender which underlie them, into conversation with each other. --Back cover

This volume sheds new light on the matter of religious mountain culture in China - a theme of great relevance to the Chinese civilization. Already during the Chinese antiquity, mountains had specific ritual functions. This may be seen as a precursor to the importance mountains gained when in medieval China Buddhism and Daoism emerged as dominant religions. Adepts of both religions often went into retreat on mountains to practice spirituality, and as a result monastic communities often formed on mountains. In the further course, certain mountains began to attract pilgrims, since they were associated with famous practitioners who had lived there, or since they were seen as the seat of particular Buddhist or Daoist deities. As it would be impossible to cover this wide field in total, the present volume is designed to offer specialized studies of selected segments. Contributing scholars include Bart Dessein, Susan Andrews, Huang Chi-chiang, Timothy Wai Keung Chan, Thomas Julch, Stephen Eskildsen, Jan de Meyer, and Louis Komjathy.

"Cet ouvrage est une monographie du théâtre tibétain 'ache lhamo', tel qu'il était joué à l'époque prémoderne, antérieure à 1950, et tel qu'il est encore joué actuellement en Région autonome du Tibet (République populaire de Chine) et dans la diaspora tibétaine établie en Inde et au Népal. Comme la plupart des théâtres d'Asie, il est un genre composite: à la fois drame à thématique religieuse, issue du bouddhisme 'mahâyâna', satire mimée et farce paysanne, il comprend de la récitation, du chant, des percussions, de la danse et des bouffoneries improvisées, ainsi qu'un usage de masques et de costumes flamboyants, qui tranchent avec la sobriété absolue de la mise en scène. Bien qu'il ait été soutenu et financé par le gouvernement des Dalai Lama, par de grands monastères et par des familles aristocratiques, il s'agit d'un théâtre avant tout populaire. "Ce volume collectif se propose, à travers ses huit chapitres, de contribuer à délimiter un domaine tantrique dans le paysage religieux de la Chine et de ses voisins. Si le bouddhisme ésotérique est au coeur de son propos, on y aborde aussi des pratiques et des représentations qui s'en inspirent en s'en distinguant, qu'elles soient rattachables au taoïsme, au shinto ou témoignent d'une présence plus diffuse au sein de la culture populaire d'Asie orientale. La première section, Imaginaires, se demande dans quelle mesure un aspect tantrique des divinités fut adopté par les peintures liturgiques servant à accompgner un important rituel commun au bouddhisme et au taoïsme, comment les romans en langue vulgaire des XVIe et XVIIe siècles s'inspirèrent des divinités indiennes représentées dans des poses lascives ou furieuses pour construire certaines figures de héros, ou comment le personnage du très populaire dieu-enfant Nezha fut façonné au fil des siècles grâce à l'importation progressive de mythes indiens par le truchement de textes du bouddhisme ésotérique. La section Rituels explique d'abord comment une efficace prière sanscrite en vint à occuper une place de choix dans la vie religieuse des Chinois du XIe siècle, puis retrace la carrière chinoise d'une oeuvre du bouddhisme ésotérique indien, le Chant des noms de Manjusri, avant d'aborder l'usage des musdra par les maîtres de rituels taoïstes de la Chine du Sud-Est. La partie Contrepoints montre comment, au Japon, une école prétendument ésotérique put finir par compter plus de dix million d'adeptes et son imaginaire comme ses pratiques influer sur les secteurs les plus divers de la société, puis décrit comment en Corée, l'État impérial s'employa à construire et promouvoir des lignées de bonzes spécialisés dans les rituels divinatoires d'inspiration tantrique.
